Photographs and text, digital manifesto, 2023
Marcus Maeder combines art and science in his work. His speculative botany addresses artistic counter-theses to invasion biology, and develops a plant science fiction that creates new relationships between humans and non-indigenous species in urban spaces.
Speculative botany consists of imagining and exploring hypothetical or fictional plants, plant traits, communities, and ecosystem relationships. Such relationships are designed based on scientific speculation or science fiction concepts. Speculative botany aims to help expand our understanding of plants and stimulate our imagination.
In 2023, Maeder displayed posters with photos and corresponding texts at several kiosks and pavilions in Spreepark. The photographs were taken during his Spreepark research residency.
