The exhibition In Conversation with Ghosts combines personal stories with shared memories and deals with both familiar and repressed moments from the GDR’s past. The film programme accompanying the exhibition deepens these insights through in-depth research into parallel realities of life in Vietnam. From 1980 onwards, the GDR signed various agreements with Vietnam to bring urgently needed workers into the country. These experiences shape memories on both sides and raise central questions: What social experiences do people here and there share? What challenges does a past marked by war and socialism pose for each individual? What role can rituals play in this?
A selection of contemporary film and video works by young and leading Vietnamese artists offers some answers and raises many more questions.
The research for this programme took place during a curatorial trip to Vietnam supported by the Goethe-Institut.
