Poetry of the Future

with Jackie Grassmann, Markus Stein and Uljana Wolf

Jackie Grassmann and Ernst Markus Stein invite poet and essayist Uljana Wolf to their installation ‘Take One More Egg’. Together, they explore the question of what ‘poetry of the future’ could be and what language gives expression to the desire for a different world. In doing so, language today must increasingly face the challenge of how it can distinguish itself from propaganda so that it remains useful for a free society, or to what extent it is perhaps itself a form of advertising?

Uljana Wolf will read a selection of her poems and then lead into a joint discussion about utopia, power and language.

Uljana Wolfis a poet, translator, and essayist whose work explores the poetics and politics of translation and the ever-shifting space between languages. She teaches poetry and translation seminars at various institutions including the Pratt Berlin programme, Institut für Sprachkunst in Vienna, and Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig. In 2022, she curated the International Literature Festival Poetica VI in Cologne entitled Sounding Archives—Poetry between Experiment and Document. In 2019, she held the August Wilhelm von Schlegel Gastprofessur für Poetics of Translation at Freie Universität Berlin. Recent publications include: Muttertask (2023); Kochanie, Today I Bought Bread (translated from the German by Greg Nissan, 2023); the German translation of DMZ Colony by Don Mee Choi (2023); and Musik für die Toten und Auferstandenen by Valzhyna Mort (co-translated with Katharina Narbutovic, 2021). Wolf lives and works in Berlin.

And by the way: 17 January is ‘Art's Birthday’, established by Robert Filiou in 1963.
